Hayley Elizabeth Marilao is a young dancer, choreographer, and teacher based in the Silicon Valley of California. She began dancing at the age of 2 through the suggestion of a speech therapist while working to overcome a speech impediment that she had been struggling with since learning how to speak. Her parents enrolled her in local dance classes at the Sunnyvale Community Center as a way to express herself and 20 years later, she is continuing to express herself through art and movement.
From 1999-2009, Marilao attended Dance Attack! Sunnyvale and was a part of the Performing Dance Company under the direction of Jean Roberts and Denise Boucher. She was able to perform at local community events such as San Jose Christmas in the Park, local nursing homes, and special holiday events produced by the surrounding cities and communities; as well as attending regional competitions and conventions. Throughout her years at Dance Attack! Sunnyvale, she was able to train under the direction of and perform choreographies by Graciela Acedo, Dominique Lomulji, Aimee Boucher, and many other skilled faculty members.
In 2009 until 2013, Marilao was a member of the Homestead Equestirettes Dance Team in Cupertino, California. As a member of the dance team, she performed at rallies, football games, local competitions, and USA Regional and National Competitions. The Equestriettes Dance Team achieved the USA National Championship Title in the Prop Division for all four years she was involved with the team, as well as being 1st runner up to the Overall Grand National Championship her freshman year. Within her experience with Homestead, Marilao was able to learn from teachers and coaches such as Sara Frausto, Keith Banks, and Nicole Foisy.
After graduating high school in 2013, Marilao attended Foothill College as a communications major while being the co-captain to the Foothill Dance Team her freshman year and a featured performer in the Foothill Repertory Dance Company from 2013-2015. Additionally, she started working at the Dance Theatre Shop Mountain View under the owner, Lisa Forte, where she learned about another side of the dance industry. After a couple of years, Marilao decided to make dance her career and moved to Orange County, California.
Marilao spent 2016- 2019 attending Orange Coast College as a dance major. She was able to develop and refine her artistic and technical skills while discovering her love for choreography and methodology. She was able to study with professional dancers and teachers such as Rachel Berman, Linda Sohl-Ellison, Jose Costas, Amythyst Fritzler, Amelie Hunter, Teresa Jankovic, and Shana Menaker. Additionally, she was able to take master classes from Linda Celeste-Sims and Glenn Allen Sims from Alvin Ailey Dance Company, Michael Nickerson Rossi from Nickerson Rossi Dance, Megan Williams from Mark Morris Dance Group, and Tamsin Carlson from Merce Cunningham. Marilao was also able to perform choreography by Eric Rivera, a Ballet Hispanic Alumni, for the Palm Springs Dance Festival. She was also invited to attend American College Dance Festival (ACDA) Baja and West Regional Conferences during her time at OCC.
While living and going to school during this time, Marilao was given the opportunity to start teaching dance at Odyssey Dance Academy in Newport Beach, California under the direction of Emily Williams. Quickly falling in love with passing on her love of movement and knowledge to the next generation of dancers, she was able to grow and develop her skills in dance methodology. She also started teaching at Underground Dance Co, founded and owned by Elizabeth Lund, where she was introduced to YPAD (Youth Protection Advocated in Dance) and committed herself to keep the world of dance age-appropriate while teaching correct and healthy lifestyle habits.
During her time in Orange County, Marilao made the decision to start choreographing on her friends and push her friends with an interest in choreography to make work on her. She has performed choreography by herself and other artists at shows such as Dance Xchange Temecula, Loose Cannons Choreography Show, OCC Invitational Dance Concert, OCC Student Dance Concert, and a benefit for Puerto Rico. Marilao was also able to self produce her own concert for San Jose Christmas in the Park in 2018, featuring performances and choreography from artists in the Bay Area and Orange County.
Furthermore, Marilao has attended intensives in both New York and California, challenging her artistic and movement qualities. She has attended intensives such as ADF Winter California Intensive, LA Contemporary Dance Company Winter Intensive, Entity Dance Co Winter Intensive, and the Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance Winter Intensive. Marilao also discovered the world of Paul Taylor in Spring 2018 after taking a masterclass from Paul Taylor Dance Company Alumni, Rachel Berman. She has since attended Paul Taylor California Summer Intensive in 2018 and 2019 at USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance under the direction of Patrick Corbin and Rachel Berman; and the Winter and Summer New York Intensives at the Paul Taylor Dance Company Studios in New York City in 2019, working and learning from Taylor 2 company members and Taylor Company Alumni. She has had the privilege to learn and perform famous Paul Taylor works such as Esplanade, Aureole, Company B, Speaking in Tongues, Dust, Images, and Party Mix.
For the future, Marilao hopes to continue developing and evolving her artistic, choreographic, and teaching skills while facilitating new experiences and opportunities for other emerging artists and teachers.
